About Donnie Rhett Koonce

For more than 7 years, Donnie Rhett Koonce has been involved in the ophthalmic industry as a technician and research assistant. He began working as an ophthalmic technician for Charlotte Optometric Clinic in North Carolina, a position he continues to hold. In this position, he is in charge of managing patient scheduling, performing visual acuity testing, and screening patients for glaucoma and high blood pressure. Donnie Rhett Koonce also handles website maintenance for the practice.

In 2017, Mr. Koonce conducted research under the supervision of Alain Bertoni, MD, MPH as a graduate student at Wake Forest University.. As a research assistant, he has been heavily involved in the search for a link between cardiovascular disease and diabetes in both men and women. The following year, he also accepted a position as an ophthalmic assistant and research assistant at Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat, PA. In this position, he has many of the same responsibilities as in his job at Charlotte Optometric Clinic.

Prior to his work in the ophthalmic industry, Mr. Koonce held various leadership and research positions while pursuing both a bachelor’s in anthropology at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte and a master’s in biomedical science from Wake Forest University. During his schooling, he served as president of the Minority Association of Premedical Students (MAPS) and he was a participant in Yale SMDEP.
